Dean P. Brennan, AICP, is a Principal Planner in charge of Special Projects in the Planning Department at the city of Phoenix. He is responsible for the Downtown Phoenix Urban Form Project, Urban Heat Island Task Force and Healthy Design Guidelines. He has a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning and a Master of Public Administration. Brennan is co-author of SafeScape: Creating Safer, More Livable Communities Through Planning and Design, published by the American Planning Association. The focus of the book is to demonstrate how planners, other design professionals, and the general public can play a role in creating a safer physical environment. He has given numerous presentations at local, state, and national planning conferences describing how the SafeScape Principles can be used to create a safer environment. In 1997, he developed the Phoenix Neighborhood Safety Audit program and has conducted many neighborhood safety audits or neighborhood “walk-abouts”. He has worked with the Phoenix Police Department in its crime prevention efforts. Brennan prepared the SafeScape Guidelines, which are used for reviewing both new and existing development. He is a member of the American Planning Association and has served as president of the Arizona Chapter and currently serves as the editor of the chapter newsletter available at http://www.azplanning.org.
