Beginnings

The Project for Livable Communities (PLC) is a nonprofit organization headquartered in metropolitan Phoenix. PLC members include urban design professionals, public health professionals, educators and journalists.

It was founded in 2005 to foster livable communities by addressing three major community components of the environments in which we live and work:

  • Healthy Design
  • Safe Design
  • Sustainable Design

Mission

PLC assists individuals, neighborhoods, communities and organizations in building and nurturing healthy, safe, sustainable environments.

Vision

PLC serves as a primary resource for individuals and groups seeking assistance and information relating to creating safe, healthy, sustainable communities.

Focus

PLC utilizes a variety of tools to communicate, coordinate, educate, network and share information on healthy, safe, sustainable design.

Goals

  • Provide a network for public health and urban design professionals
  • Serve as a liaison between professional groups
  • Demystify urban design practices and language
  • Advise public health professionals on interacting with planners, planning groups, city councils, boards of supervisors and the media
  • Serve as a clearinghouse for resource information on livable communities
  • Provide a speakers bureau
  • Host workshops and presentations
  • Offer sample presentations
  • Provide a library of digital images
  • Track successful projects and best practices
  • Assist with writing and editing projects
  • Provide guidance with the grants process, including identifying opportunities and pre-submission review
